When you can travel on a student visa
You can arrive before your course starts. This can be either:
  • 1. Up to one week before, if your course lasts six months or less
  • 2. Up to one month before, if your course lasts more than six months

You must not travel before the start date given on your visa, no matter when your course starts. Asthese are specific to the UK, speak to us if you have any questions or need information for yourspecific requirements.

Fees

As an example, it costs: £348 to apply for a student visa from outside the UK.

You must pay the visa fee for each person who accompanies you. That is, if you are married andwant to bring your partner along, you will need to pay for both yourself and your partner. The sameis true if you have children.

Healthcare surcharge and medical insurance

You’ll also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application. In the UK, the healthsurcharge is paid to the NHS (National Health Service).

People from outside the EEA coming to the UK for a temporary stay of more than six months arerequired to pay an immigration health surcharge at the time of the visa application and will then beentitled to NHS treatment on the same basis as a resident. This includes overseas students with avisa to study at a recognised institution for six months or more, but not visitors on a tourist visa. In2016, the surcharge was £200 per year, with exemptions and reductions in some cases. This wasincreased to £400 in 2018. The discounted rate for students and those on the Youth MobilityScheme will increase from £150 to £300.

How much you will pay depends on how long your visa lasts. Check how much you’ll have to paybefore you apply.
